Protein booster help needed

I talked to Dr. D last week about protein level and it appears that I am not getting enough. I started adding Ultra Meal between bigger meals to boost the protein level but my stomach does not like it. If I am lactose intolerant, will I also not process whey products well? I made a smoothie using 50% hemp protein this morning and I have no problem with hemp. Do I just need to add more smaller meals and make sure I have meat protein with them (I really don't like eggs, so hard boiled eggs will not be a staple)? What about lentils and beans (adzuki, etc.)?

It's getting easier

Pretty much in a good routine now of cooking and being prepared with my allowed foods. Cravings are not physical anymore but still battling the mental part. I had identified some of my cravings as a feeling of needing to fill a void of frustration or unsatisfaction. If I didn't feel like my day was satisfying, I would try to fill the evening with food that I found satisfying (usually comfort foods that are not good for me) and despite being "comfort foods" they made me feel worse. Still lots of work to do on this part of the equation!

Citrus Dressing modification

I am not a fan of olive oil so my friend, Charlotte Layne (also a colon hydrotherapist) suggested altering it with grapeseed oil instead of olive oil. She also suggested using orange juice instead of grapefruit juice for a sweeter version. I made these adjustments and totally love the new dressing. I like to just drizzle it on raw veggies like tomatoes, cauliflower, etc. Dr. D, thanks again for great recipes to start from.

READING LABELS IS A MUST!

I bought minced garlic at Sprouts (in the produce section, implying freshness) and didn't read the label until I got home and opened the jar. Guess what they packed the garlic in....Partially hydrogenated soybean oil!!!!! What horror! I can't wait until my own garlic is ready to harvest again this year. I will make sure I work it up this year and put in the freezer.

Recipe Makeover Question

Is it OK to use Cornstarch or should I be looking at another substitute as a thickener to makeover my recipes. I have a luscious asparagus & cashew recipe that I want to share but I need to write up the makeover first.

Today is pretty good.

After such a rough day yesterday I still went to 1 hour of water aerobics. This morning I was doing pretty good, no headaches. I even cooked me some scrambled eggs with onion and red peppers this morning for breakfast (and Joseph I didn't have to use ketchup to get them down!). Today has been pretty good and I am going to cook a big pot of vegetable soup tonight. I noticed today that while everyone else around me has been sniffling and complaining about allergies, I have had no symptoms since starting the detox. My first big benefit!

Detox Friendly Cosmetics

In my never ending search for "clean" lotions, soaps, shampoos, conditioners and body washes, I came across a brand called Griffin Remedy while reading some shampoo labels at Wheatsville Co-op today. I was pleasantly surprised by their ingredients, as I recognized every one and it wasn't a list as long as my arm (I think there were an average of 6 ingredients in their various products). I recently discovered that the J/A/S/O/N/S shampoo and conditioner I have been using for about a year, wasn't as clean as I thought it was after a quick search in the Cosmetics Database. I stopped using it last week, and tried Dr. Bronner's baby friendly liquid all purpose soap instead, only to end up with what felt like a head full of straw.

I've yet to try the Griffin Remedy shampoo and conditioner I purchased this evening, but will report back as soon as I have. I also tried the Omega-3 unscented lotion tester at Wheatsville, and it was *awesome*! I'm a lotion connoisseur, and instantly fell in love with it's rich moisture and soothing effect on my skin (I have very sensitive skin). Unfortunately, they were out of the unscented kind at Wheatsville, so I'm going to order some from the Griffin Remedy website. I'm really excited about how clean these products seems to be and look forward to trying out their whole line! Like their slogan says, "what goes on your skin goes in your body."

Rough Day

Today has been rough (day 4) with massive headache at 1:30 a.m. and lots of trouble with hot flashes. I think it was a massive hot flash that gave me the headache. I am hanging in there. I hope this breaks soon.

I really feel great!

So yesterday I put on a pair of jeans that didn't fit me when i first bought them. When I tried them on at the store they wouldn't even close. I put them on and they fit. It was a great feeling. Towards the end of the day they started to feel even looser. OMG it feels so awesome. This morning I put on a dress for church and the dress fit me so baggy. And its only been a week.

Well in reviewing my 1st week of detox. I have learned that I can do this. I really thought I was going to have a hard time doing the detox. I feel that being prepared has helped me alot.
I am make sure I have almonds ready for a snack so that my blood sugar doesn't go low. Also I am eating more often and making extras for left overs. Good thing I stocked up on alot of veggies for all my meals. I am planning my weeks meals today that way I know in my mind what i am eating.
I am really enjoying this detox. I didn't know I was going to start seeing results right away. I have had sweet cravings and tortillas cravings. I really thought before i started that they would win but they aren't . Will POwer!!!!

Well let the 2nd week begin ...

My Detox Symptoms

Yesterday was Day 5 for me on the detox and I finally remembered to start the Cyto cleanse & catch products. I took 2 capsules of the Cyto Cleanse around lunch, 2 more in the evening and then began to feel *very* strange. I started feeling a lot of pressure in my head and face, but not what I would call a headache. I then began to have dizzy spells and some symptoms of detachment (I didn't feel connected to my hands/arms), which I felt for the first time last year prior to having my first panic attack. This came in waves and was very unsettling to me. I was finally able to take the Cyto Catch and waited to see if my symptoms would improve. I fell asleep while waiting for the pressure and dizziness to decrease (it had become a headache at this point), and when I woke up at 7:30 am my head was STILL hurting in the same manner. I got up to use to bathroom and laid back down. I woke up again a couple of hours later and my symptoms were gone! Wesley and I assumed (while it was happening) that I was having a release of toxins into my system from the Cyto cleanse which was causing the weird symptoms. I'm kind of leery of taking the Cyto cleanse today, but I know I'd rather get the toxins out than have them locked up in my fat cells.

I weighed myself this morning and the scale just keeps going down! I can't tell you how many things I've tried in the last 2-3 years to loose this steroid induced weight gain only to have the scale mock me. Oh yeah, and I feel like I'm eating more regularly than I have in a long while. Sometimes I would go all day only to have a late lunch or dinner that was probably void of a lot of nutrients, if not all. Wesley and I are taking turns cooking (yay!) and eating everything fresh is so rewarding to the taste buds! We're eating less at every meal, but I'm feeling satisfied (unfortunately, Wesley reports that he is often still very hungry). We've both had sugar & starch cravings but have managed to find some acceptable items that we can call "treats" in order to keep us on the straight and narrow (for me it's Greek yogurt and blackberries). Realizing when your "hunger" is mental is a huge arrow in your quiver.

One more interesting symptom I just thought of. My abdominal muscles were really, really sore when I woke up on Thursday, as if I had spent hours in the gym doing crunches and oblique work a day or two before. I haven't done any exercises or activity that would make my abs feels so sore since Sunday! Could this be a symptom of detoxing as well? I've never felt this before but it's kind of exciting for me. :-)

Looking forward to our Monday meeting!

Non-Chlorine Deodorize and fragrances:

Non-Chlorine deodorizer/disinfectant cleaner: "Good Ol' Hydrogen Peroxide! Mix 50/50 and use to wipe out refrigerator, ice coolers, cutting boards you cut chicken up on, mildew in shower, etc. This is mixture disinfects and eliminates odors without damaging your nostrils.

I have acute chronic rhinitis (super duper sensitive nose) and almost everything bothers me (perfumes, anything chemical). I would encourage everyone to eliminate all perfumes, scented deoderants, scented body lotions, etc. Once you eliminate all these items, you will notice how much everything smells. We are overwhelmed everyday with tons of fragrances (laundry soaps, dryer sheets, cleaning products, lotions, air fresheners, etc.). If you want good smells, I suggest getting a "Scent Ball" (Whole Foods used to sell them) or just use a folded up paper towel and add drops of essential oils in your favorite flavor (can also layer your favorites for your own custom fragrance). My favorites are Peppermint, Spearment, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Lavender. All the mint varieties are associated with activity/well-being.

By eliminating fragrances yourself you will also be contributing (or actually non-contributing) to the health of others!

Cosmetics Database by Environmental Working Group....because my wife says "I NEED" to clean my face

The following list of "Things to Do" was taken from the Cosmetics Database which provides an enormous database of good and bad chemicals found in everyday products.  If you're at home, get your personal care products and look up stuff using this site.

Visit http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ for more info!

  1. Use our What Not To Buy list to avoid especially problematic ingredients — like mercury, lead, and placenta — and the products that contain them.
  2. Use fewer products. Is there something you can cut from your daily routine, or a product you can use less often? By cutting down on the number of chemicals contacting your skin every day, you will reduce any potential health risks associated with your products.
  3. Use the "Advanced Search" feature of Skin Deep to find products that have fewer potential health issues. Choose a product category and exclude the hazardous ingredients — carcinogens and neurotoxins, for instance — and Skin Deep will generate a custom shopping list for you.
  4. Read labels. Marketing claims on personal care products are not defined under the law, and can mean anything or nothing at all, including claims like organic, natural, hypoallergenic, animal cruelty free, and fragrance free. Read the ingredient label carefully to find evidence that the claims are true.
  5. Use milder soaps. Soap removes dirt and grease from the surface of your skin, but also strips away your body's own natural skin oils. Choosing a milder soap may reduce skin dryness and your need for moisturizers to replace oils your skin can provide naturally.
  6. Minimize your use of dark hair dyes. Many contain coal tar ingredients that have been linked to cancer in some studies.
  7. Cut down on your use of powders; avoid the use of baby powder on newborns and infants. A number of ingredients common in powder have been linked to cancer and other lung problems when they are inhaled. FDA warns that powders may cause lung damage if inhaled regularly.
  8. Choose products that are "fragrance"-free. Fragrances can cause allergic reactions. Products that claim to be "fragrance free" on the packaging may not be. They could contain masking fragrances that give off a neutral odor. Read the ingredient label — in products truly free of fragrance, the word "fragrance" will not appear there. Find "fragrance"-free products with our advanced search.
  9. Reduce your use of nail polish. It's one of the few types of products that routinely contains ingredients linked to birth defects. Paint your toenails and skip the fingernails. Paint nails in a well-ventilated room, or outside, or avoid using nail polish altogether, particularly when you are pregnant. Browse our custom shopping guide for advice on nail polishes that contain fewer ingredients of concern.

The Story of Cosmetics

Cleaning With Vinegar

Homemade Fruit & Veggie Wash

There are several variations on this vinegar & water wash, some adding lemon and some with different ratios of water to vinegar. Play around with it a bit until it works for you! Organic is best for soft-skinned fruits & veggies, but when that isn't an option, give this a try!

For Hard-skinned Fruits and Vegetables:

1. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water.

2. Then, spray the solution onto your fruits and vegetables; rub or scrub it in; and rinse.

For Soft-skinned Fruits and Vegetables:

1. Fill a bowl with equal parts white vinegar and water.

2. Then, soak your fruits and vegetables in the solution for a minute or two, and rinse.

Why This Works:
The acetic acid in vinegar kills bacteria and helps to dissolve the wax and pesticide residues found on the skins of many fruits and vegetables.

Merlin's Magic All Purpose Household Cleaner

This is an incredibly basic recipe that will provide you with some awesome, non-toxic all-purpose cleaner. I used my first batch in my bathroom last night and was blown away with how well it worked! Hard water stains, soap scum...gone with just a spray and a wipe! I really wouldn't have believed how well it works until I tried it, and can say from personal experience that it works better than chemical laden (toxic) cleaning product from the store, and won't irritate your skin or lungs in the process! It feels nice to use something that I know isn't toxic to me or anyone else in my house.

Even better, you can tweak this recipe to your liking. I added about a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice to my concoction to give it extra cleaning power and a lemon fresh scent. :-)

Fill a 16 oz. spray bottle nearly to the top with water. Add 3 Tablespoons of your favorite Dr. Bronner’s castile soap and 20-30 drops of tea tree oil. Shake it well and spray it on bathroom or kitchen surfaces, floors, even dirty little hands if they’re nearby. Wipe off with a damp cloth.

Household Toxins: Watchout with Teflon

We've spent some time talking about the dangerous chemicals and additives in food products, but remember that detoxification deals with environmental chemicals and compounds that we are not regularly ingesting.

At least you shouldn't be inhaling anything....wink...wink...Joseph :)

Several studies have been conducted as well as reproduced and verified relating common household products and their link to cancer, infertility, autism and other diseases - yet many Americans may not realize just how many of these harmful substances they’ve actually ingested in the course of everyday living.

The answer? According to the Environmental Working Group, About 48.  The results, say EWG experts, show that regulation of chemicals in the U.S. is weak and “antiquated” and needs a major overhaul.

The tests, performed by four independent labs in the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands, looked for traces of 75 common chemical contaminants that might turn up in people because they are used in household goods, plastics, beauty products and food and water.
